We’re lucky to be surrounded by some of the best mountain biking in the world, right here in Snowmass Village. Many call it a mecca for this adrenaline-filled, family-friendly sport and amazing exercise.
People come from all around the country to ride the big-mountain, lift-access course on Snowmass Mountain and the beautiful single track trails that surround the town.
Mountain biking may seem a bit intimidating after watching videos of thrill-seekers flying down steep trails and launching themselves off jumps and cliffs, but with a little info, a firm hand on the brakes and maybe even a guide, it’s accessible to most everyone.
Let’s start with the world-famous Snowmass Bike Park. 100% lift-access terrain makes for an all downhill day, without the need to bust your butt getting to the top of the mountain. Trails range from ultra-beginner to ultra-advanced. If you’re brand new to the sport and maybe even biking in general, there are affordable bike clinics offered where you’ll have a professional guide show you the ropes.
Day tickets range from $10 to $42, depending on your winter pass status, and there’s plenty of options for bike and full equipment rentals nearby. While the resort rents bikes at the bottom of the lift, you can save a few bucks ($30-$40) by grabbing a bike from Gene Taylor’s Sports in the mall and riding down to the lift from there. The most affordable option around, they rent a full-suspension (downhill) bike for $55 for 24 hours and a hardtail (cross-country) bike for $40.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to go that fast!
The next option for mountain biking in Snowmass, and a favorite for locals, are the plentiful cross-country singletrack trails.
These are less about the downhill speed and tricks and more about the traverse. Yet depending on the trail you choose, be ready for some solid inclines and occasionally tricky lines to manage. Our recommendation is look at the Mountain Bike Project website to check out trails before you jump on the saddle. Here are a few fan favorites around town:
- Rim Trail – This intermediate 10.5 mile ride is one of, if not the most popular ride in the Roaring Fork Valley. With amazing views of the surrounding mountains throughout, some exciting up and downhill, this one is not to be missed. Click here for more info.
- Snowmass Trails to Aspen – If you’re seeking a more adrenaline-filled, expert level ride, look no further. This is one of the best trails around for experienced riders and will not disappoint. Click here for more details.
- Discovery Trail – Probably the most family friendly ride in Snowmass, this trail can be tackled by almost anybody. A quick 2 mile ride with grand views is a good introduction to the sport and Snowmass wilderness. One rider describes it as, “A wide, smooth, and easy climbing-only trail that rewards riders with big views the higher you climb.” Click here for more details.
- Ditch Trail – Another great trail for families and beginners. If done in full, this trail is 4.5 miles out and back, but feel free to turn around if the going gets tough, as it starts to get steeper about 1.5 miles in. Click here for more details.
We hope this bit of info is enough inspiration for you to get out in Snowmass and enjoy the riding!
