It’s no secret that Aspen and Snowmass have been well documented on film throughout our recent history. Aspen and the surrounding towns have been relatively famous around the globe, partially due to the appearances in Hollywood.
Epic ski conditions aside, Aspen and Snowmass have been portrayed in many ways on screen. While some aren’t 100% positive or accurate, we get a kick out of seeing our lovely little town on the big screen. Here are a few of our favorite films involving Aspen and Snowmass:
Aspen Extreme (1993)
The ultimate classic and required watching if you’ve been to Aspen, are planning to go to Aspen or have ever thought of going to Aspen. 90s film at its best with more corny lines than you can imagine and absolutely ridiculous ski moves. Based on a couple young guys moving to Aspen to become ski bums, then turned instructors, this sums up the public consensus on Aspen twenty years ago.
Dumb and Dumber (1994)
Some place warm, a place where the beer flows like wine, where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I’m talking about a little place called Aspen.
By far the most popular and most quoted movie in this list, is of course Dumb and Dumber. Assuming just about everyone born after 1945 has seen it, we won’t discuss the plot. They actually nail the often hilarious, flaunting of wealth that is Aspen in the winter. Unfortunately, Loyd and Harry didn’t make it to Snowmass in the film!
Until We Meet in Aspen (1950)
One of the first films to feature Aspen, this post-war depiction of the town is a fascinating history lesson. Featuring some establishments that are still around today such as Hotel Jerome and The Wheeler Opera House, and some we’re glad have changed such as those single person chairlifts. Although, this film may be very dated, the general theme of mountain town paradise hasn’t changed a bit!
Dogs The Untold Story (2017)
The most recent depiction of Aspen on film is from local production company, Vital Films. This is a clip out of a Discovery Channel series that tells the story of our avalanche rescue dogs right here in Snowmass and Aspen.
