The last time that the FIS Alpine World Cup Finals were in Aspen, CO was 1950. That’s 67 years ago. Although the Winter X Games have been dominating the stage for winter events in Aspen for several years, this is one that you do NOT want to miss. Alpine ski racing is a big deal across the world. The World Cup Finals, when held in Europe, draw crowds that make American football stadiums look tiny. Between the amount of people, culture of ski racing, and the fact that it’s been 50 years since Aspen has hosted such an event, we are in for one crazy week, Aspen. This is a rare opportunity to experience a race like this in Aspen!
When Aspen Food and Wine comes to town, about 650 volunteers are needed to make sure things go smoothly. For this year’s FIS Alpine World Cup Finals, they are asking for help from 800 people. That’s a lot of volunteers!
Aspen/Snowmass local Wendle Whiting writes “Ski racing has a long history in our town. If it weren’t for ski racing Aspen may have never become the international brand it is today, and certainly wouldn’t have been boomed out of the Quiet Years so quickly.” Read his whole column here.
