So, you’re in a mountain town but have given those planks a try and decided they are not for you. Fair enough. We can’t all love sliding around on frozen H20.
Luckily, you’re in a lively enough ski town where there are plenty of alternative activities. Here’s a few of our favorites in and around Snowmass.
Snowshoeing
This one might be fairly close to skiing, but it sure is a lot safer. One of the best ways to catch amazing mountain views, at a speed where you can really soak it all in. There are plenty of outfitters that rent and provide snowshoe tours but one of our favorites is the ACES Snowshoe Tour. Aspen Center for Environmental Studies has incredibly knowledgable guides that discuss the ecology and natural surroundings on your trip and will show you some amazing spaces. Here’s a little more information on their programs.
Snowmobiling
Another great way to experience the breathtaking views in the Roaring Fork Valley is a snowmobile tour. These tours can be a short mission into the backcountry or a full day adventure, with chances to see a variety of snowy landscapes. The main snowmobile operator is the T-Lazy 7 Ranch, just outside Aspen. Have a look at their different packages here.
Cocktail Lounges
If your idea of a mountain getaway is hanging around a warm fireplace, sipping fantastic drinks and meeting other travelers, we can’t blame you! That does sound pretty nice about now. One of the best places to get a good cocktail in Snowmass is the Viceroy. This hotel at the bottom of Fanny Hill has a comfortable lounge surrounding the bar and always a good choice for a nice drink. If you’re looking for an on-hill experience, Venga Venga make some great drinks and has unbeatable views of the mountain.
Shopping
Everyone knows that Aspen is a hub for shopping, but few really investigate the Snowmass mall. This is where you’ll find all kinds of outdoor gear outfitters and store fronts. If you’re looking for designer fashion, then Aspen is a short drive away.
Bowling
Who knew there’s a mountainside bowling alley right in Snowmass? Just below the Snowmass mall, you’ll find Slopeside Lanes. The food is fantastic, bowling rounds are affordable and they are open fairly late. This is a favorite locals option when the ski day is done, so make sure to reserve your lane!
Movies
While Snowmass doesn’t have its own theater, the ISIS Theater in Aspen has the comfiest seats, plenty of snack options and is always showing the latest flicks. While we prefer the mountainous surroundings of Snowmass, we’re happy to have Aspen a quick 15-minute drive away for a good movie.
Ice Age Discovery Center
Not just for kids, the new Ice Age Discovery Center offers a fascinating look into the history of our region. Including fossils of the recently discovered Wooly Mammoth and countless other amazing artifacts, this mini museum is definitely worth stopping in. Bring the kids or just satisfy your own curiosity and learn a thing or two about this astounding area.
