Getting to Snowmass Village is part of the adventure. Nestled in the Elk Mountains at the end of a scenic valley road, the village is deliberately tucked away from the interstate — which is exactly what keeps it intimate, uncrowded, and beautiful. The drive in along Highway 82 through the Roaring Fork Valley, with the mountains rising sharply on both sides, sets the mood before you’ve even unclipped your ski pass. Here’s everything you need to know about getting here, whatever your starting point.
Flying In: Your Three Airport Options
Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) — 15 minutes, closest and easiest. If you can get a direct flight to Aspen, take it. ASE sits in the Roaring Fork Valley just 8 miles from Snowmass Village, making it the most convenient airport for any mountain resort in Colorado. American Airlines flies direct from Dallas (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX), Chicago (ORD), and Phoenix (PHX) in winter. United serves Chicago (ORD) and Los Angeles (LAX). Delta connects from Atlanta (ATL) and New York (JFK) seasonally. The altitude approach into a narrow mountain valley makes it one of the more dramatic landings in commercial aviation — worth the window seat.
The trade-off is that ASE is served by fewer cities and fewer daily flights than the larger airports, and winter weather can cause delays or cancellations. For flexibility, book refundable fares or build in buffer days at either end of your trip.
Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) — 70 miles, 75 minutes. Eagle County serves additional hub cities and is the go-to alternative when flights to ASE are full or too expensive. It receives direct service from New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), Dallas (DFW), Houston (IAH), Chicago (ORD), Denver (DEN), and others in peak season. The drive to Snowmass from EGE follows I-70 East briefly, then Highway 82 South through Glenwood Canyon — one of the most spectacular stretches of interstate highway in the United States. Allow 75 to 90 minutes.
Denver International Airport (DEN) — 3.5 to 4.5 hours by shuttle or rental car. DEN has the most nonstop flights from across the country and is often the most affordable option. The drive involves I-70 West through the Front Range foothills, over the Continental Divide at the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel (11,158 feet), through Summit County, and down the western slope to Glenwood Springs, then south on Highway 82 to Snowmass. Allow at least 4 hours under normal conditions, more during holiday weeks when I-70 backs up from Denver to the tunnel.
Driving: Directions and What to Expect
From Denver International Airport: Exit DEN and take I-70 West. Continue for approximately 157 miles to Exit 116 (Glenwood Springs). Take Highway 82 South for about 41 miles through Carbondale, Basalt, and El Jebel. Turn left on Brush Creek Road and continue 2.5 miles into Snowmass Village. Total: 195 miles, 3.5–4.5 hours.
From Salt Lake City: I-15 South to I-70 East, then I-70 East to Exit 105 (Glenwood Springs west), then Highway 82 South. Total: about 275 miles, 4.5 hours under good conditions.
From Albuquerque: I-25 North to US-285 North to Highway 82 West into the valley. Or take I-25 North to I-70 West and come in from Glenwood. About 300 miles, 4 to 5 hours.
Driving tips: Keep chains or snow tires in your car in winter. Vail Pass and Glenwood Canyon can close during severe storms; check COTrip.org before you leave. I-70 westbound on Friday afternoons and eastbound on Sunday afternoons is notoriously congested during ski season — leave early or adjust your travel days if possible.
Shuttle Services: The No-Drive Option
If the drive sounds daunting or you want to start your vacation the moment you land, both of Snowmass’s primary shuttle companies offer excellent service.
Colorado Mountain Express (CME) operates the largest shared-ride shuttle network in the Roaring Fork Valley and serves all three airports. Shared van service from DEN to Snowmass runs on a rolling schedule and costs a fraction of a private car. Private SUVs and vans are available for groups or anyone who prefers door-to-door service. Book in advance — especially during Christmas and Presidents Week when seats fill weeks out.
Epic Mountain Express (operated by Vail Resorts) provides scheduled and charter service from DEN and EGE with a fleet of high-comfort vehicles. Good option for groups flying together from Denver.
For ASE arrivals, taxis and rideshares are available curbside and the village is 15 minutes away — often the easiest and least expensive option.
Getting Around Once You’re Here
One of Snowmass Village’s best features is that once you arrive, you don’t need a car at all.
Free Snowmass Village Shuttle runs a continuous loop between the Snowmass Mall (the upper village retail and restaurant hub), Base Village, and Stonebridge Condominiums. It operates from early morning until late evening during ski season, with expanded service on busy days. No fare. No app needed. Just step on.
RFTA (Roaring Fork Transportation Authority) operates valley-wide bus service connecting Snowmass Village to Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale, and Glenwood Springs. Buses run frequently in ski season, accommodate skis and bikes, and cost a few dollars each way. If you want to explore Aspen for a day of shopping, art galleries, or a different mountain, the RFTA is the easiest way to go.
Lift access from Stonebridge: Stonebridge Condominiums’ ski-in, ski-out position means you step outside and you’re on the snow. The Village Express lift is steps away. You will not need a car to reach the mountain on a single morning of your stay.
Parking at Stonebridge and in the Village
Stonebridge guests have dedicated parking on-site — free, covered, right at the building. The village has a large public parking structure at Base Village with daily and season rates for additional vehicles. During peak holiday periods, the village fills by mid-morning on big ski days; guests staying on-property are immune to this.
If you’re driving in from Denver, our guests often tell us the drive down Highway 82 into the valley — with the mountains rising on both sides and the sun on the snow — is one of the best parts of the trip. It’s 41 miles from Glenwood Springs to Snowmass and every one of them looks like a postcard.
