We’re happy to tell you this year’s winter reports look promising so far. Below are a few summaries of the snow reports this winter. It’s impossible to say for sure, but it is looking like Aspen Snowmass will be having a great winter!
NOAA Report
NOAA, one of the most trusted American weather agencies, has reported a 70% chance that we will have an El Niño 2018-2019 winter season. This early prediction means a warmer than average winter across the United States.
The good news for the Aspen Snowmass area: The initial prediction calls for above-average snowfall at both the beginning and end of the season. Start your snow dances now and we just may have a powder day on Thanksgiving!
The Old Farmer’s Almanac Report
Although the Old Farmer’s Almanac may use some odd methods to reach their predictions, they have a surprisingly accurate record. They call for above-average temperature and precipitation this winter.
They predict the snowiest periods to be in late November, late December, early and late January, mid to late February, and early March.
It’s important to note that all these predictions are just that – predictions. Although they are a good place to start, take them with a grain of salt and of course, pray for snow!
What is El Niño?
An El Niño has different effects across the world but typically means a warmer and wetter winter for Colorado. Whether this leads to a higher snowfall is hard to determine, but historically it is a good sign for Colorado skiing and snowboarding!
